Big vs Small Bong: Is Bigger Better?

big and small bong side by side

Stumped on whether to choose a big or small bong? Some cannabis enthusiasts vow by small water pipes for their portability and ease of use. Others love the additional features characteristic of big bongs such as percolators and ice catchers to filter and cool smoke. Both have their unique advantages which we’ve outlined so you can choose the best one for you.

Why Choose Small

  • Ease of use: Small water pipes tend to be easier to handle and smoke. The small stature makes it easier to position yourself over the mouthpiece, lift the bowl piece and fully clear the chamber.
  • Low Tolerance: If you have a low tolerance, smaller is ideal because you have greater control over how much you consume without overdoing it. Smaller water pipes almost exclusively feature a 14mm bong bowl which holds less weed than an 18mm. Additionally, their small chamber limits how much smoke can accumulate before it’s cleared.
  • Travel-friendly: Small bongs offer an on-the-go filtered smoking experience. This size is ideal if you want a lightweight, compact piece to take on your next adventure.

Potential Cons to Consider

  • Smaller Hits: Bong enthusiasts are often drawn to water pipes in the first place because they offer a more powerful experience compared to smoking joints or blunts. However, a smaller chamber limits the amount of smoke you can take at one time. While you can take back-to-back hits, some people prefer the effect of one massive single hit.
  • Less Filtration: Small bongs don’t offer nearly as much filtration power as larger pieces because they have less room for water. If you are looking for a smoother smoking experience, a larger piece may be better.

Why Choose Big

  • Smoother Hits: Big bongs often feature a large chamber to hold water, offering enhanced filtration and cooling smoke more efficiently.
  • Bigger Hits: With more space for smoke to accumulate, you’ll be able to take generous hits.
  • Home Base: If you plan to only smoke at home than a bigger piece may be preferred.
  • Sharing: Many large bongs feature an 18mm sized bowl which requires less refilling. For instance, if you’re smoking with a group, 18mm big bongs are ideal to pass around. An 18mm can deliver roughly 6-10 hits per bowl compared to the 4-7 hits of a 14mm. You can keep the sesh going without having to constantly stop to refill.

Potential Cons to Consider

  • Not Portable: Naturally, larger water pipes are bulkier and harder to transport. They’re great for home, but not the best option to travel with.
  • A Hassle to Clean: The larger the piece, the more maintenance it will require. Larger bongs tend to be particularly difficult to clean because their size limits your reach. What’s more, they often include more percolators than small bongs. A little patience and isopropyl alcohol goes a long way though!

What’s the Verdict?

Choose a Small Bong if:

  • This is your first bong.
  • You have a low tolerance and little goes a long way.
  • You tend to solo sesh.
  • It’s just you and a friend.
  • You tend to smoke on-the-go.
  • You want minimal maintenance.

Choose a Big Bong if:

  • You want large, powerful hits.
  • You want enhanced filtration and cooling.
  • You tend to smoke in a group.
  • You want a statement piece.

My Personal Preference

As the co-founder of Stoners Rotation, time and time again I choose small bongs. I prefer the smaller hits they deliver because I maintain a relatively low tolerance, even after all these years. For me, bigger isn’t better. I tend to smoke more than intended with bigger pieces and don’t feel my best the day after. Overall, I’m able to go on with my plans for the day and stay productive with smaller water pipes. That said, if you want to completely veg out, a small piece will still get you there. You may just have to pack another bowl.

If you need more guidance or have any other questions, feel free to ask me or our team of experts. You’re well on your way to finding the bong of your dreams!
