Best stoner shows on Netflix

Over the last decade, Netflix has proved itself a behemoth and a worthy contender in the streaming wars. For many, Netflix has become the favorite go-to service for well plotted and stylistic movies that check all the right boxes. We have endeavored to ensure that the stoner community is not left behind by curating a list of the best movies to watch on Netflix when high.

It’s true that the guys at Netflix haven’t consumed enough cannabis to the point where “Stoner Movies” is considered genre worthy. Nevertheless, the future holds a lot promise for stoners who binge on Netflix. The absence of an outright stoner label on Netflix isn’t an indication that Netflix doesn’t have an amazing collection of movies worth a stoner’s while.

Not all the movies listed portray the use of marijuana with reckless abandon. There’s something magical about the visual and audio aspect of these movies that make them the perfect weapon to kill time when high. From single releases to binge-worthy TV shows, you won’t need to flip through Netflix’s unending catalogue the next time you’re high.

Mac & Devin go to High School (2012)

How you goin watch a mo-fukin weed movie without no motha fuckin weed? (Watch on Netflix)

Our first entry may appear somewhat cliché; but once a stoner classic, always a stoner classic. It stacks up incredible stoner moments featuring two iconic celebrity stoners and real life buddies – Snoop Dogg and Wiz Khalifa. To the sober mind, it’s just a low budget shitty movie (truly, it barely has a plot).

The intro offers all the explanation in the world:  “how you goin watch a mo-fukin weed movie without no motha fuckin weed!… Now if you enforcing it right now and don’t have any weed, I’m sorry, but please, stop this movie right now, it just won’t work, you can’t watch this shit wit out no weed, STOP. You don’t play baseball without no bat do ya? exactlyyyy, for the same reason you don’t watch a 3D movie without 3D glasses. So go figure that out and go put your god damn ganja goggles on get ready for liftoff, thank ya kindly”

This is a must see for a group of stoners.

Bojack Horseman (2014 -2020)

No one watches the show to feel feelings (Watch on Netflix)

Bojack Horseman is the animated comedy show that gives stoners existential crisis. It’s the perfect mix of silly, funny and stupidity and that’s why we love this beautiful abomination (literally). The show starts off light and gradually grows in depth, creating a profound connection with the characters which comes together with a striking brilliance. How does casting a lead character with a horse’s head and a man’s body make a great TV show? Deep characters and excellent story lines!

The more interesting part is the emotion the show evokes when you’re high. The small jokes and animals puns are neat and clever!

Black Mirror (2011 – 2019)

Authenticity is in woefully short supply (Watch on Netflix)

Create stories from all your futuristic technology fantasies and give them really tragic endings. That’s basically Black Mirror. When you look into a mirror, you see a reflection of yourself. When you see Black Mirror, you see a pitch black reflection of everything that can go wrong with upcoming technology. The episodes aren’t linear like in regular series. It doesn’t matter in what order you watch (except for the last episode).

The shows f**** your mind over when you’re sober and gets you thinking like crazy when high. The dark tinge is an added viewing pleasure when high.

Altered Carbon (2018 – 2020)

Take what is offered and that must sometimes be enough (Watch on Netflix)

The surest way to ruin your movie experience is to read the actual book a movie was adapted from first. Altered Carbon has raised a lot of dust in the Sci-Fi community. The book fans are against those who just want to appreciate the movie for its independent merits. Regardless, the movie is a visual ecstasy. The world building, concept and scenery set in the far away future are somewhere between perfection and legendary. There’s nothing similar in the entire movie world.

Thankfully, weed does not allow books meddle in the affairs of the mind and movies. Let Mary Jane douse your mind of everything that might get in the way and get blown away.

Rick & Morty (2013 – Present)

Listen, Morty, I hate to break it to you, but what people call “love” is just a chemical reaction that compels animals to breed. (Watch on Netflix)

If you loved Family Guy, American Dad, South Park and other popular R rated animated shows, you’ll love this even better. It gets even better with each episode. The writing is very smart with crude humor and abundance of absurdity.

You’ll find yourself connecting so much with Rick when the ganja unlocks your sixth sense.

Stranger Things (2016 – Present)

Friends don’t lie (Watch on Netflix)

This show is a bang for the 80s kids now turned Tea head’s! Regardless, it’s also appealing no matter what decade you’re from. Once you get invested in the characters and engrossed in the storyline, it’s really difficult to stop watching. The lead characters maybe kids but they sure do know how to keep a show running. With weed and Stranger Things, traveling back in time and living in 80s isn’t a far stretch.

Bonus fact: Weed definitely has a way of magnifying mythical creatures!

Bob’s Burgers (2011 – Present)

Only strippers shave above the knee. (Watch on Netflix)

There’s rarely a bad episode in this animated sitcom. It’s full of heart with an endless supply of laughter. It also gets delightfully weird with its raw construct. As soon as you’re done with Ricky & Morty and Bojack Horseman, get in here.

Stoners don’t try too hard to be cool and neither does Bob’s Burgers.

Dazed and Confused (1993)

If I ever start referring to these as the best years of my life — remind me to kill myself (Watch on Netflix)

The name Dazed and Confused might describe your condition when you’re really high more than it describes the movie itself. “Have as much fun as you can, wherever or whenever”.

Fun is engraved in the stoner’s creed and this movie will just help you feel good.

That 70s Show (1998 -2006)

I’m telling you, the government has a car that runs on water, man! (Watch on Netflix)

Classics are all the light we need on some days or some nights to brighten our life. The 70s show broke FOX’s jinx and ran for eight seasons (such a feat). Easy laughs and good characters!

Don’t get grass stuck in your teeth, you will need to flash them a lot through the movie.

Kid Cannabis (2014)

Look at me. The Shit that we grow here is f*cking insane (Watch on Netflix)

Kid Cannabis is based on a true life story. Once you know a movie is based on a true life story, it becomes too real. You might learn a few life lessons on dealing pot. Guess that’s legal now huh?

Being high and seeing a good movie based on a true life story is an experience you don’t want to miss.

Get glued into your couch

The next time you hop onto Netflix after a smoking sesh, you won’t have a hard time having a good time. Put your pot and Netflix subscription to good use right away! The best movies to watch high should be next on your list if you’ve seen everything on Netflix already!
