Back to the Future

We start with a classic: Back to the Future. Although this movie dates back to1985 movie, it’s a must-see for Rick and Morty fans.

Back to the Future was actually one of the inspirations for the creators and producers of the show. You might be surprised to find a lot of similarities and references between them.

This sci-fi movie tells the story of Marty McFly, a 17-year-old high school boy who gets transported 30 years back in time to the year 1955. This is possible through time machine car, built by his friend and scientist Dr. Emmet Brown.

When Marty gets stuck in the past, a fight against time begins. The question is, will he make it?

Jurassic Park

Jurassic Park is, no doubt, another movie that we can get enough of. Much like Rick and Morty.

Ever had the chance to visit a theme park where you can be face-to-face with dinosaurs? This is the plot behind the first movie of the sequence.

A billionaire creates a theme park with cloned dinosaurs. Before the opening, he hires a group of experts to visit the park and certify its safety. It all goes well until it doesn’t. After a power failure, the park’s dinosaurs run loose, terrifying all visitors.

Jurassic Park is thrilling and made history. Filmed in Kauai and Oahu, its visually extraordinary for its time and the vivid green jungle will without a doubt get you higher. It is a sweet movie for a rewatch and if you haven’t seen it, where have you been all this time? Time to pack a joint and enjoy one of Steven Spielberg’s early hits.

As you may well remember, the film is referenced in episode 3 of season 1 “Anatomy Park”. The reference is not only in the title, but they also use the park logo.

Nightmare of Elm Street

Nightmare on Elm Street is also one of the many references that appears in Rick and Morty.

A group of teenage friends started to have the same horrifying dream: a disfigured man with a tattered sweater and gloves made with knives chases them. What seems to be only a bad dream turns real when they start to get violently killed while asleep, causing their deaths in the real world as well.

Years before starting to torment their dreams, Freddy Krueger murdered several children. He was arrested but not charged. Outraged with the decision, the parents of the kids that were terrorized and killed by him decided to take justice into their own hands and burned him alive.

Now, his ghost is seeking revenge. The only way to stay alive is to stay awake. Let’s just hope the ganja is so strong that you won’t have trouble knocking out after this one!

In Rick and Morty’s second episode of the first season “Lawnmower Dog”, there is a reference to this movie and two others, “Inception” and “Lawnmower Man”, our next suggestion.

Rick and Morty even has its own version of this scary movie villain, Scary Terry, which by-the-way is hilarious!

The Lawnmower Man

Let’s go back to Rick and Morty’s second episode of the first season. This episode shows the Smith’s dog, Snuffles, becoming a brilliant being through advanced technology.

Now let’s talk about this strange plot.

Dr. Larry Angelo works for Virtual Space Industries and runs experiments using psychoactive substances and virtual reality to enhance cognitive performance. He starts testing it with chimpanzees but quickly decides to use the mentally disabled lawnmower, Jobe Smith, as a test subject to see if he could increase his intelligence – kind of like what happens with Snuffles.

At first, it all seems well, but not for too long. Jobe develops psychic powers and decides to start a bloody revenge on all of those who took advantage of him.

The Lawnmower Man is a movie from 1992, based on the Stephen King short story of the same name with the same premise. Ready to go to another planet? Just don’t let Jobe’s clean hungry sponge of a brain get inside your head!

The Guardians of the Galaxy

Last but not least, we have the Guardians of the Galaxy.

Let’s take a look at Rick and Morty season 3, episode “Vindicators 3: The Return of Worldender”.

This entire episode is inspired by Guardians of the Galaxy, so we could not let this one go.

Guardians of the Galaxy is a 2014 superhero Marvel film. It is an epic space adventure about Peter Quill, a bounty hunter, that steals a mysterious orb. Not long after, he discovers the orb’s true power and how much damage it can make if it gets into the wrong hands.

The problem is that Ronan, a powerful villain with great ambitions, also knows its power and will do whatever it takes to get it.

Quill sees himself forced to join a strange group with four disparate misfits: a Rocket Raccoon, a treelike-humanoid Groot, Gamora and Drax the Destroyer. They must save the universe.
